“If we had a keen vision and feeling of all ordinary human life, it would be like hearing the grass grow and the squirrel's heart beat, and we should die of that roar which lies on the other side of silence.”

- George Eliot, Middlemarch

“Beauty descends from God into nature: but there it would perish and does except when a Man appreciates it with worship and thus as it were sends it back to God: so that through his consciousness what descended ascends again and the perfect circle is made.”

- C.S. Lewis

About the name…

In musical notation, meno mosso directs the musician to play less quickly— to slow down, to savor. I believe photography helps us to do the same. Each session is an exciting opportunity to be present in a moment, and to have that moment documented in a beautiful way.

And about me…

My name is Emma Ogilvie, and I am a photographer based in Woodstock, Virginia, but I frequently travel outside the Shenandoah Valley. I am inspired by natural light, movement, and memory, and I will always take the time to make sure that we create images that are an honest depiction of the beauty we experience together during our session. I’m also the wife of a really fun guy and mother of two fantastic kids, who have all taught me to be adaptable and approach things with wide eyes and an open mind.

My approach comes from a deep desire to humanize a process that can easily become clinical and lifeless. Working with film not only eliminates some of the technological distractions that come from digital gear, but also provides an end result that I consistently find closer to how the eye perceives a scene. It allows me to be more intentional and thoughtful during the session, and to touch the images less during processing.

I care a lot about getting to know what makes you feel most like yourself, and I consider that to be my guiding principle when planning a session. Whether you have a creative vision already, or simply find yourself in need of photos for personal or professional use, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
